Types of evaluations
All evaluations at The Luminous Mind are considered comprehensive for the referral concern, such that they will assess that concern and other possible diagnoses (called “rule-outs”). Evaluations will help clarify mental health or personality related diagnoses in addition to the presenting concern. Each evaluation includes a diagnostic assessment/clinical interview, gathering of collateral information, communication with other professionals (as needed), record review, all necessary testing, scoring and interpretation of assessments, face-to-face feedback (in person or telehealth), and report writing time. In total, an evaluation can range anywhere from 8-20+ hours of the psychologist’s time.
- ADHD – cognitive, executive, and attentional testing - $1500
- Learning disability – cognitive and learning testing - $1500
- Intellectual disability/developmental delay – cognitive and adaptive testing - $1500
- ADHD & Learning Disability Combined - $2000
- ADHD & Intellectual Disability/Developmental Delay Combined - $2000
- Intellectual Disability/Developmental Delay & Learning Disability Combined - $2000
- Autism evaluation – $2000
- Neuropsychological evaluation – this generally involves some combination of ADHD, learning disability, memory, language, and/or motor testing - $2500
- Full evaluation – assessing all concerns related to attention, learning, memory, and autism - $3000
NOTE: Testing is NOT like testing you have in school. You are not expected to know everything, and you cannot get “100%” on it. Assessments are often designed to see how you problem solve, and sometimes increase in difficulty as you get further in a test. No one can perform perfectly on the tests.
A psychological evaluation involves several steps and many hours.
A psychological evaluation involves several steps and many hours.
- The first appointment is three hours long and usually involves:
- An interview about current needs, challenges, strengths, and questions (1-2 hours). Interviews are comprehensive and cover a variety of aspects of your life
- Questionnaires designed to provide data that helps us see which areas of functioning are similar to other people, which may be strengths, and which may be areas of challenge or need. Questionnaires are either on the computer or paper and pencil. They ask about your own experience and have no right or wrong answers; and
- Direct assessment/testing. This will be explained to you before starting
- The second appointment is scheduled for three hours. It may or may not take the whole time. The goal will be to finish testing.
- The third and final face-to-face step is a feedback appointment. Currently, these appointments are conducted via Zoom. The appointments are scheduled for 1 hour, but the psychologist keeps an open schedule after feedbacks to allow for extra time. During the feedback appointment, the psychologist presents a one-page summary sheet to initially provide overall diagnostic impressions. The psychologist then talks about the diagnoses, discusses the evaluation process (e.g., interview, records, assessments), and clarifies how it led to the diagnoses. The feedback session closes by discussing recommendations.
- NOTE: These feedback appointments are often somewhat overwhelming. The psychologist presents a lot of information in a fairly short time. You are strongly encouraged to interrupt, ask for clarification, ask the clinician to repeat things, or note that you are feeling overwhelmed. This is normal! Whenever needed, you can have another appointment to further discuss results. You are also encouraged to take notes and ask questions. While it can be a lot of information, the goal is that you feel questions have been clarified or answered!
- At this point, the face-to-face portion of the evaluation is often complete. You are strongly encouraged to contact your psychologist if you have further questions or need any clarifications. The psychologist then writes a comprehensive evaluation report. This comes to you via email in a couple weeks.
- You are then strongly encouraged to read the report and reach out to the psychologist with any more questions or concerns.
